The Prodigal Son
From Christianity
In a distant land, there lived a wealthy man who had two sons. The younger son, filled with restlessness and a desire for adventure, approached his father one day and asked for his inheritance ahead of time. Though saddened by his son's request, the father divided his wealth between his two sons, and the younger son set off to seek his fortune in a faraway land.
In this distant land, the younger son lived a life of extravagance and excess, squandering his inheritance on wild living and frivolous pursuits. But as time passed, a famine swept through the land, and the younger son found himself destitute and alone, with no one to turn to for help.
Desperate and ashamed, the younger son resolved to return to his father's house, hoping to find work as a hired servant. As he journeyed homeward, rehearsing his apology in his mind, he wondered whether his father would even welcome him back after his foolishness.
But when the father caught sight of his wayward son in the distance, his heart overflowed with compassion and joy. Running out to meet his son, he embraced him warmly, showering him with love and forgiveness.
"My son," he exclaimed, tears of joy streaming down his face, "you were lost, but now you are found. Let us rejoice and celebrate, for you have returned home."
Overwhelmed by his father's kindness, the younger son could only nod in gratitude, humbled by the depth of his father's love. And as they made their way back to the house, the father called for a great feast to be prepared, inviting friends and neighbors to join in the celebration.
Meanwhile, the older son, who had remained faithful to his father and worked diligently in the fields, heard the sounds of music and merrymaking coming from the house. Confused and resentful, he approached one of the servants and asked what was happening.
"Your brother has returned," replied the servant, his voice filled with joy. "Your father has welcomed him back with open arms, and there is great rejoicing in the house."
But instead of sharing in the celebration, the older son grew angry and refused to join the festivities. "I have served you faithfully all these years," he complained to his father, "and yet you have never thrown a party in my honor. Why do you celebrate the return of this wayward son of yours?"
But the father, sensing his older son's bitterness, reached out to him with understanding and compassion.
"My son," he said gently, "you have always been with me, and all that I have is yours. But today, we rejoice because your brother, who was lost, has been found. It is right to celebrate his return, for he was dead and is alive again."
And so, the parable of the Prodigal Son teaches us of the boundless love and mercy of the Divine, who welcomes us back into His/Her embrace with open arms, no matter how far we may have strayed. It reminds us that true humility leads to forgiveness and restoration, and that there is always cause for rejoicing when a lost soul returns to the fold.
