THE ANGELIC HIERARCHIES
The concept of Angels (messengers of God) is found in traditions across the world. As with all concepts over time, the description of Angels and the hierarchies is varying. One of the most well-known descriptions of the Angelic Hierarchy comes from Angelology developed by Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, a mystic from the late 5th to early 6th century. Note that there are hiearchies in the fallen Angel realms too. We’ll save that for another day.
The traditional Christian angelic hierarchy consists of three triads or choirs, each containing three orders of angels. Here is an overview, starting from the highest order:
First Triad (closest to God)
Seraphim
Cherubim
Thrones
Second Triad
Dominions
Virtues
Powers
Third Triad (closest to humans)
Principalities
Archangels
Angels
Each angelic order is believed to have specific duties and functions within the divine hierarchy. Here are some of the traditional roles associated with each of the nine orders of angels in the Christian angelic hierarchy:
Seraphim
Seraphim are often depicted as the highest order of angels, closest to God.
They are associated with the intense love and adoration of God, as well as the purification of the divine.
Cherubim
Cherubim are often portrayed as guardians of divine mysteries and wisdom.
They are associated with knowledge, wisdom, and the protection of sacred spaces.
Thrones
Thrones are considered to be the angels of pure humility and submission to God.
They serve as the celestial beings that uphold God's justice and authority.
Dominions
Dominions are thought to regulate the duties of angels in the lower hierarchy and manage divine tasks.
They are associated with the execution of God's orders and the administration of the celestial hierarchy.
Virtues
Virtues are often seen as bestowing grace and blessings upon the material world.
They are associated with miracles, courage, and the maintenance of order in the cosmos.
Powers
Powers are considered warrior angels who defend against evil forces.
They are associated with the protection of the divine, as well as overseeing the cosmic order.
Principalities
Principalities are believed to be guardian angels of nations and rulers.
They guide and protect groups of people, nations, and institutions.
Archangels
Archangels are often seen as messengers or heralds of God.
They serve as intermediaries between God and humanity, delivering important messages and guidance.
Angels
Angels are considered guardian angels for individuals.
They have various roles, including delivering messages, guiding and protecting individuals, and carrying out specific tasks on Earth. We each have Angels standing next to us right in this moment.
It is said that Humans are the 10th Hierarchy of Angels. We are here to not only re-member our divinity, but what role we, as humanity, play in the evolution of consciousness.
I hope you found this overview helpful and may it inspire your own adventures into the wonderful world of Angels.
