THE PATH OF THE MYSTIC

I have often felt lonely walking the path of spirituality. It feels like I’m floating between two worlds, with no solid footing in either. One of my favorite teachers, Gigi Young, wrote about the path of the mystic recently. Her words, like most, struck so many chords within my heart. I wanted to share them with you here, in case you ever find yourself feeling lonely too.

Note that when she speaks about Christ, it’s a Holy Divine force she’s referring to. Jesus the Christ embodied this force for three years until his death at the age of thirty-three. There have been many great beings in history, including Buddha and Krishna, who are also from the Christ stream. The Angels of the Solar Force (i.e. those Angels that serve the Divine) are also from the Christ stream.

The Path of the Mystic

Walking the path of the Mystic can be challenging as more often than not you will receive information that confronts mainstream opinions. Spiritual sight can be years, or decades, ahead and thus the mystic must bear the burden of appearing foolish and 'crazy' to the world. Often times their work does not reach full maturation until after their death.

This dynamic is why we see the archetype of the holy fool often played by spiritual teachers to gain a sense of control. Both Gurdjieff and Blavatsky would often times act out in seemingly bizarre and contradictory behaviour. While many people saw those behaviours as being evidence of mental instability, consciously becoming the fool worked to free them from the pressures of both adoration and ridicule. Rather than being a victim of this dynamic, they took control of it. The holy fool understands that by nature they are moving against the mainstream and says: 'If the mystic must also be a fool, then I will be a fool of my own making.’

Ultimately the mystic has to choose between honoring their own vision and following the crowd. If you choose to walk your own path you will feel the searing pain of loneliness and the realization that the only place to go is inward. Yet as you go inward, you meet your darkest thoughts and traumas that seem to distort the very visions you feel compelled to share. You realize that while you have a sense of higher truth, you are also partially blinded by your own bias and unhealed wounds. Eventually every mystic discovers they are the wounded healer.

Now that you have chosen to live from your inner world the next step is purification. To walk the path of the mystic you cannot desire adoration, acceptance or power from the world. You must get it from within. And thus, the first level of purification is to release attachments to the material plane. For the mystic, seeking power, validation and meaning in the world is contradictory. And, the mystics that use their powers solely for personal gain will eventually suffer great humiliations and the degradation of their gifts.

Once the mystic incorporates purification, the next challenge that they will face is the sacrifice of themselves. They will come to realize that the only way to interact with the Spiritual World in a meaningful and loving way is to be of service, and that to be in service you must sacrifice not only your own desires but your will to God/Christ. Your will must unite with Christ and you must become a direct vehicle for that force.

Ironically, and this is where the glory and the beauty lies, when the mystic surrenders to Christ within themselves, their true identity appears before them. All the obsession with discovering the Self, and creating an identity in the world, become ridiculous acts of desperation. As when you enter into your heart to meet Christ, your true Self appears immediately in His light.

It is Christ's essence resting within your own heart that makes your true identity visible. Thus we have entered into the paradox that when we surrender ourselves to the highest force known to man, we finally become whom we were always meant to be - only through truly selfless activities can we discover our true Self. We experience the irony that self discovery, and even external knowledge, does not come from the ego, nor lower our faculties, it appears as though its always been there when unifying with the essence of Christ within our hearts.
